Size and shapes of Bacteria

Welcome all dear student on krishiratna blogs in this blog you will get detail information about Size and shape of bacteria in very simple language.

 Size of Bacteria

    -Measured in micrometer(  Âµm)

-Size of bacteria varies depending on species.

    - Size of bacteria generally ranges from 1 to 10 micron

    - Size of cylindrical or rod shaped bacteria i.e. Bacilli is 2-3 Âµm

    - Size of spiral or helical bacteria i.e. spirilli is 0.75-1.25 Âµm

Shapes in Bacteria:-

-Spherical /Ellipsoidal/Oval shape bacteria is called Cocci

-Cyllindrical / Rod shaped bacteria is called Bacilli

-Spiral /  helical shaped bacteria is called Spirilli

Arrangement of bacterial cell

Arrangement of bacterial cell is important for the identification of bacteria

Cell grouping or arrangement in cocci:-

 i)   Monococus:- Single spherical bacterial cell

ii) Diplococus :- A cocus divided in two planes and cell remains in pairs

III) Streptococus:- A cocus arrange in long chain eg. Streptococus

vi) Tetrad:- A cocus divide into two planes, second division is right angle to first plane of division and forms a square of four cells

vii)  Sarcina:- A cube of eight cocus cells is formed by three divisions in alternate planes at right angle to each other. A cube of eight cell is known as sarcina

viii)   Staphyllococci:- A cocus cells divided into three planes in irregular pattern like cluster of cells is known as Staphyllococci

ix)     Vibrio:- The short comma shaped cells called as vibrio

Cell grouping or arrangement in Bacilli:-

i)Monobacilli:- Single rod shaped bacterial cell eg Monobacillus

ii) Diplobacilli:- Bacilli are arrange in pair of two cell eg. Bacillus

iii) Streptobacilli:-  Cells are arrange in chain eg. Lactobacillus bulgaris

iv)Palisade:- Group of cells are lined side by side like matchsticks in match box called as palisade                                 arrangement

Cell grouping or arrangement in Spirilli:-

a)          Short tightly coiled rod called Spirillum

b)          Short incomplete spirals called as comma or vibros

c)          Long twisted with several curves cells called Spirochete
